Note: Governor Ryan signed S.B. 149 on August 13, 1999. Our personal thanks to Rep. Bill Black in helping get this bill passed.

    1. The main improvement in SB 149 is to exempt businesses with less than 40,000 sq. ft. of floor space. Further regulations are to come from the Illinois Commerce Commission. This law is expensive to implement for Illinois businesses, particularly for Ameritech customers implementing through Ameritech (which may be your only choice.) Schools and other large buildings will need to prepare for being in compliance by June of 2000.

    2. Examples of one time and on-going costs to implement E-911 on a business phone system. Most newer systems can comply by adding software and special circuit boards. Older systems may not comply and others may be able to comply with expensive adapters..

    3. Ameritech customers can comply with Illinois Law by using E-911 Lite. This package is much less expensive to implement. P.S. Don't bother calling the Ameritech 800# for E-911 - it's been disconnected as of October, 2002.

    4. FCC rules - Click here to go to another site to see the pending FCC rules. The FCC rules would only pertain to very large business installations.
